Su Historia<\/h2>\n

La Plaza del Potro es uno de los lugares m\u00e1s representativos de la ciudad de C\u00f3rdoba,\u00a0situada en las cercan\u00edas de la Ribera del Guadalquivir dentro de la Axerqu\u00eda, o zona\u00a0Este de la ciudad tras cruzar las antiguas murallas de la Medina.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tanto la plaza como al barrio que la circunda se convirti\u00f3 en uno de los grandes ejes neur\u00e1lgicos y comerciales de la baja edad media, con una gran actividad econ\u00f3mica que contribu\u00eda a que muchas personas visitaran el lugar y en especial esta plaza en la que seg\u00fan algunas fuentes se comerciaba con caballos y bestias. Se trataba, por lo tanto, de un lugar muy visitado por feriantes, visitantes y comerciantes, lo que justificar\u00eda la existencia de la famosa Posada del Potro, actual Centro de Flamenco Fosforito, que sirvi\u00f3 para alojar a quienes necesitaban hacer noche en la ciudad y como prost\u00edbulo.<\/span><\/p>\n

En el centro de la plaza hay una fuente en cuya parte superior se sit\u00faa un potro que data del siglo XVI, \u00a0reinando entonces Felipe II. El objetivo de su creaci\u00f3n era el de mejorar el abastecimiento de agua a esta parte de la ciudad, utilizando para ello el agua proveniente del Manantial Maim\u00f3n que discurr\u00eda a trav\u00e9s de un acueducto de \u00e9poca romana situado a unos 10 km. Tambi\u00e9n se encuentra en este espacio el antiguo Hospital de la Caridad de Ntro, Se\u00f1or Jesucristo, actual Museo de Bellas Artes y Museo Julio Romero de Torres.<\/span><\/p>\n

Su leyenda<\/h2>\n

Cuentan que un posadero, en tiempos del rey Pedro I, alojaba a los hu\u00e9spedes importantes en una habitaci\u00f3n de la posada alejada del resto de las estancias, con el pretexto de evitarles molestias y que, pasando por C\u00f3rdoba un capit\u00e1n que se dirig\u00eda a Sevilla, se aloj\u00f3 en dicha posada. Cuando este capit\u00e1n se retiraba para dormir, guiado por el posadero, una misteriosa dama, a quien apenas pudo ver, le aconsej\u00f3 que no durmiera.<\/p>\n

El militar permaneci\u00f3 despierto, meditando acerca del aviso de la bella joven que parec\u00eda hija del mesonero, aunque sus finos modales lo desment\u00edan. La noche era fea, el viento y el agua azotaban las ventanas hasta que lograron abrirlas; hab\u00eda truenos y rel\u00e1mpagos y la \u00fanica luz que hab\u00eda se apag\u00f3. Le parec\u00eda ver mil fantasmas y oy\u00f3 como si abrieran una puertecilla. Entonces se retir\u00f3 a un rinc\u00f3n y sac\u00f3 su espada. No o\u00eda nada, pero sus ojos se dirig\u00edan a todos los rincones por si a la luz de los rel\u00e1mpagos lograba divisar algo. Por fin, bajo el lecho vio la figura del mesonero que asomaba por una trampa del suelo, observ\u00e1ndolo y esperando para ver si estaba dormido.<\/p>\n

Furioso, se arroj\u00f3 por una ventana al corralillo. All\u00ed, casualmente, estaba la muchacha que le hab\u00eda advertido; lo empuj\u00f3 fuera del mes\u00f3n y le dijo que fuera a Sevilla y le contara al rey lo que all\u00ed pasaba. A los cinco d\u00edas fue recibido por Pedro I en el Alc\u00e1zar y este le prometi\u00f3 averiguar lo que ocurr\u00eda, jur\u00e1ndole que, si descubr\u00eda alg\u00fan delito, el mesonero ser\u00eda ejemplo para los de su clase. Cuando el rey lleg\u00f3 al mes\u00f3n, mand\u00f3 recorrerlo todo ante el espanto del mesonero. Hallaron la trampa bajo el lecho en el que alojaba a los viajeros ricos y encontraron a la joven que ped\u00eda venganza. Desenterraron multitud de cad\u00e1veres y encontraron numerosas alhajas y ropas robadas a los desgraciados hu\u00e9spedes. De uno de ellos era hija la joven que se interes\u00f3 por el capit\u00e1n.<\/p>\n

El rey, actuando con gran furia, agarr\u00f3 al mesonero del cuello y lo hizo salir a mitad de la plaza. Orden\u00f3 a unos verdugos que le ataran las manos a la reja de la posada y amarraran dos potros a los pies del hombre. Despu\u00e9s azotaron a los caballos para que galoparan y lo despedazaran. Un grito de horror surgi\u00f3 de la gente, pero el rey amenaz\u00f3 con hacer lo mismo al que pronunciase una palabra.<\/p>\n

Momentos despu\u00e9s, los brazos del hombre colgaban de las rejas y los caballos arrastraban el cuerpo por las calles cercanas. Don Pedro entreg\u00f3 al capit\u00e1n como esposa a la bella joven, con todas las riquezas que all\u00ed se encontraban, y prometi\u00f3 al Corregidor que, si ten\u00eda que volver all\u00ed para administrar justicia, le har\u00eda a \u00e9l lo mismo que mand\u00f3 hacer con el mesoner<\/p>\n
